Electro Warz Friday

This Friday I'll be playing some music at Rob Perry's Electro Warz night at Mac's. I think I am just going to bring my laptop setup and play silly (italo) music and dance too much. Come get ill.

Here's a track I got off Italo Deviance.

Shalamar

Before Soul Train the TV show there was Soul Train Records, home of the Soul Train Gang, The Whispers, and soon-to-be 80s R&B giants, Shalamar. I picked up their first 12" in NYC last week, released in '77 just before the co-founder of the label, Don Cornelius, split to start the TV show and the label was renamed SOLAR Records. The A-side (a Motown disco medley) was a #1 hit for Shalamar, and the B-side sounds like fantastic music for a blissful video montage:

Their best work, however, certainly came after the 70s left...

NEW MIX and gig at Spiral Thursday!

OK here are some tunes I threw together live yesterday afternoon. The mixing is pretty damn rough on account of the fact I didn't really practice, and most of these have live drummers, and blah blah blah blah but this very much reflects stuff I've been diggin' (and not diggin') lately. Enjoy.

Aside from this, you should be at Spiral this Thursday as I will be laying down some 80s disco/funk out on the patio under the stars. Gallons, Pretty Boi, and Mike MacNamara will also be there along with resident Rob Perry. Honestly these Thursday nights at Spiral have been incredible vibes all summer. Make it happen.

Make up time...

I hope I can make up my lack of posts to you with a couple rips of some 1983 boogie smoothness.

Whitfield strikes again!

Speakin' of ol' Normie. Whitfield went on to do disco production, most notably with Rose Royce, with whom he produced and wrote most of the Car Wash soundtrack. They were still at it well into the 80's, so here's one from 1981's Jump Street, "R.R. Express". The album version below is ironically five minutes longer than the 12" "Long Version". Thank God though, because the first few minutes are an incredibly mediocre attempt at trying to hang onto the 70s disco sound, but around the four minute mark the vocals drop out and it hits a nice groove. Then by the seven minute mark we get a cosmically searing Whitfieldian guitar solo followed by all sorts of echoing synthesized space debris. Disco loves patience.

Psych it out!

Norman Whitfield was the producer responsible for catching Motown up to the psychedelic era. After he did stuff like the Temptations' Psychedelic Shack he worked with a band that was more or less his own little experiment called The Undisputed Truth. (He wrote, arranged, produced and mastered just about all of it.) Even though most of their success was in their earlier years, today I bring you a couple great rips off of their fifth album, Cosmic Truth.

The first two tracks get my pick: Earthquake Shake is a great funky jam that rides the wave between disco and soul. Note that by 1975 Motown had moved operations to California, hence the dance being started "on the West Coast." A minute and a half interlude links with the second track, a totally kickass Neil Young cover that I won't say anything else about.

Somethin' funky

I'm not actually sure exactly what to put this under, something between soul, funk, and disco. It starts out as a funky piano soul jam, then halfway through an unexpected yet welcome synthesizer jumps in for a rather psychedelic solo, then the high hats start opening up and it falls into a little proto-boogie disco beat this time with a smooth 80s-style synth taking lead (in 1975). Whatever you call it, I call it awesome.

And for those of you in the charitable and/or danceable mood this Saturday, I'll be helping out a benefit for the MSU Children's Health Initiative spinning at the MSU Dance Marathon 12-2am, preceded by Ian Olmstead and followed by Rob Perry. The whole event runs 7pm Saturday to 7am the next morning in the 1st floor gym of IM Circle.

Mike Mukti

'Bout time for some local stuff around here eh? Good thinkin. DJ Mukti handed me his full length, Lion's Share a few weeks ago. It's a full hour of great cerebral house/disco music with all sorts of samples fluttering and panning over each other. Many of the tracks don't follow the staple DJ-friendly electronic arrangement as they lack breakdowns or convenient phrases for mixing another track. Instead, they end up sounding like miniature mixes themselves, adding and dropping elements until the end of a five minute song sounds nothing like the beginning. Letting the songs turn into whatever "they're feeling" is fine, but it leaves them sounding like parts of a missing greater whole. So my only desire now is to hear this as one continuous mix, buuuuut I suppose that's why it's an album and not a mixtape.

Couldn't decide so I have to post three tracks here: Eh Yeah, Squeek, and Work It! The former starts out somewhere in 80s breakbeat electro land and quickly turns into a Ratatat-like club vocal track before the 80s beat comes back and slides under a slightly distorted Sigur Ros sample. (If that isn't Sigur Ros, then I'll wear my pants on my head tomorrow.) Squeek is a great synth track that DJ's will find easy to mix. Work It! I suppose is a Daft Punk remix; however, that doesn't do nearly enough justice to the instrumental. The familiar sample is almost a distraction from the strings and synth battling for lead in the song. The first half is some excellent disco house production and probably my favorite bit on the album. Unfortunately the strings find their way out around the two minute mark, but the rest of the track holds nicely.
The whole album plays like a great mix that just happens to have breaks between tracks. There's a lot to discover, so if you feel inclined toward anything below, you can stream the whole album on his virb site.

When Mukti's not making music, catch him drawing and printing t-shirts or meditating amidst a small clan of Buddha Machines. (These deserve a post in and of themselves, but for now, sample the magic here.)

Are You Ready???

I figure I'd better start this off the way I like to start off my sets, and that is funky. So as a most appropriate inaugural post, here is a little 1982 boogie-funk gem I found in the dollar bin the other week. Trama and I both ask you, ARE YOU READY?

And for all you real space boogie-nauts out there:

That guitar solo comes outta nowhere!!

Note: I'm just getting into the whole ripping vinyl deal, so it'll take some experimentation to get better quality, normalization and such. Hang in there, audiophiles!
