So I missed out on a St Patrick's Day post, but I'm replacing it with something related but not so Irish-centric. My favorite band for years in high school was The Pogues, an 80s London band of Irishmen playing folk music with punk speed and attitude. Frontman Shane MacGowan did most of the writing, and you can now find his songs alongside the traditionals in the set lists of just about every Irish folk band. He was buddies with Joe Strummer, who stepped in for him after he left but also made a few guest appearances beforehand. I got these tracks way back in the glory days of Napster but recently found they were from a show in 1988 when Shane was still in the band. Clash songs with folk instruments? Yes please.
